Improved Gulf Stream separation through Brinkman penalization

چکیده
The advantage of a smooth representation bathymetry in terrain-following σ-coordinate ocean models is compromised by the need to avoid numerical errors on steep slopes associated with pressure gradient discretization or spurious diapycnal diffusion. Geopotential z-coordinate these errors, but greatly underrepresent interaction flow topographic slope, especially when underresolved. Hybrid coordinate are also deficient because it difficult find satisfactory compromise between z and σ coordinates. More general vertical coordinates (not just combinations σ) can be used, particular for interior, without solving problems bathymetry. With volume penalization, we do not seek compromise, rather correction usual systems that realistically recovers continuous Brinkman penalization method studied here modified version one introduced Debreu et al.(2020) simplifies implementation increases robustness improves its computational performance realistic long-term simulations, while preserving accuracy. Hybrid wavelet collocation–Brinkman penalization method for complex geometry ows
This paper introduces the hybrid wavelet collocation–Brinkman penalization method for solving the Navier–Stokes equations in arbitrarily complex geometries. The main advantages of the wavelet collocation method and penalization techniques are described, and a brief summary of their implementation is given. The hybrid method is then applied to a simple ow around cylinders with both periodic and ...

متن کاملA Brinkman penalization method for compressible flows in complex geometries
To simulate flows around solid obstacles of complex geometries, various immersed boundary methods had been developed. Their main advantage is the efficient implementation for stationary or moving solid boundaries of arbitrary complexity on fixed non-body conformal Cartesian grids. The Brinkman penalization method was proposed for incompressible viscous flows by penalizing the momentum equations...
متن کاملPersistence of Gulf Stream separation during the Last Glacial Period: Implications for current separation theories
[1] We present stable oxygen isotope ratio (dO) measurements on deep-dwelling planktonic foraminifera from thewesternmargin of the North Atlantic in order to reconstruct the latitude at which the Gulf Stream separated from the western boundary of the Atlantic Ocean in the past. The modern separation latitude can be reconstructed within one degree from dO measured on the fossil shells of deep-dw...
متن کامل4 The Gulf Stream System
N. P. Fofonoff In the two decades since the first publication of Stommel's (1965) monograph on the Gulf Stream, our knowledge of the Gulf Stream System has been expanded dramatically through the development and application of new, powerful measuring techniques. Multiple ship surveys of the type organized by Fuglister (1963) provided the first systematic descriptions of the spatial structure bet...
